Portable

What is it?

Our multiple award-winning Portable is the start of your tapeless workflow. It can record anything, from HD for television to the highest quality digital cinematography cameras. It can be carried on an operator’s shoulder, or secured to dollies and cranes. The Portable gives your camera crew the freedom to move around a set or location, with enormous recording capacity.

What does it do?

The Portable can record up to five hours of cinema quality HD material, or eight hours of high-end HD broadcast material – plus audio and metadata – onto a single, removable Datapack. When shooting is done, it offloads material much faster than real-time – typically three to five times faster.

Who is it for?

Anyone who wants to work faster, at the highest quality. A weather-resistant unit, the size of a toaster, and weighing just 4Kg/9lb, the Portable is ideal for single or multi-camera production. It can record simultaneously from two 4:4:4 cameras – for A&B or 3D stereo shoots – or from two 4:2:2 cameras. Six synchronised Portables can even be used as a 12-track video, 48-track audio-recorder – ideal for an entire concert, sporting event, or reality TV show.

How does it work?

The Portable delivers immediate full-frame playback and review as video. It also delivers reference and viewing files over a network for full on-set quality control. Used with a Codex Studio system, it can deliver shots in multiple industry-standard formats – these can be generated on-the-fly for editing systems to use without importing. Recordings are made to hot-swappable, shock-mounted RAID-3 Datapacks.

The Portable records using visually lossless wavelet compression, with compression ratios from 3:1 to 8:1. It also significantly reduces the storage requirements of a production.
